The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1883, the Phillies are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of American professional sports. Their considerable age has contributed to their dubious distinction of having lost more games than any other MLB team. However, they have won two World Series (1980 and 2008) and six National Pennants.
The Philadelphia Phillies became George Ruth's Major League debut in the 1920s. Unfortunately, this was a rather bleak period for the team, and Ruth himself was nursing a bad pitching arm. Nonetheless, then-manager Art Fletcher kept Ruth pitching, rather than letting him play the field. While Ruth was able to hit six home-runs, the Phillies' venue, the Baker Bowl, was designed such that home-runs were quite attainable, so even this act was not enough to save Ruth's career.
After a season and a half, the Phillies traded Ruth to the Boston Red Sox.
In 1964, the Philadelphia Phillies played in the World Series against the Los Angeles Browns. Sam Yeager, a resident of Los Angeles, was rooting for the Browns, but would have put his money on the Phillies had he been a gambling man.
