Ecumenical Patriarch of Videssos was the most important and prestigious ecclesiastical position in the Empire of Videssos. Candidates for the position were submitted by the Avtokrator, and a synod of religious authorities would choose the patriarch from the list. The patriarch's duties included officiating over coronation and wedding ceremonies for the empire's monarchs, such as the ceremonies for Krispos as well as the coronation ceremony for his infant son. Below is a list of the known Patriarchs.

Phavritas[]

The holy Phavritas was a Patriarch from before the days of Avtokrator Stavrakios. A temple in Videssos the city, dedicated to his memory, housed the tombs of deceased Avtokrators and their families.[1]

Pothos[]

Pothos was Patriarch nearly 350 years before the arrival of the Ronams. He traveled to Imbros to root out an outbreak of Balancer heresy. Pothos and the incumbent Avtokrator did not always see eye to eye.[2]

Balsamon[]

Sebeos[]

Sebeos, prelate of Kypas, was chosen Patriarch of Videssos at the end of the War Against the Yezda. One of his first official duties was to officiate the wedding of Princess Alypia Gavra to the military hero Marcus Aemilius Scaurus. Sebeos was nowhere near as good a speaker or as winning a personality as his predecessor Balsamon, but the same could be said of any man.[3]

Tarasios[]

Tarasios was the Patriarch of Videssos. He sent his nomophylax Kassianos to deal with a troublesome case of false doctrine in Opsikion, but the nomohylax was diverted to Develtos where he encountered a new problem.
