Madrid is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States. It is usually pronounced "MAD-rid". Mining was the primary draw for Europeans. The Spanish mined the lead in the area in the 17th century. Coal mining began in 1835, with a boom in the latter half of the 19th century. By the 1940s, coal was dying out. Now, Madrid is primarily an artist's community. The population was 149 at the 2000 census and 204 in 2010.
Madrid in The House of Daniel[]
Madrid was a company town for the coalmines. When the House of Daniel arrived in May 1934 to play the Miners, Jack Spivey wondered if coming to Madrid had been a good idea. Still, the House got to stay in company housing and were provided meals, and even played in the Oscar Huber Ballpark, which had salamander lights.[1]
