Ooatag was a former slave who served as a harpooner aboard the Queepahd before Milvil and Geekgeek joined the crew.[1] As he was the largest of the harpooners, Ootag was often tasked with breaking open the skull of harpooned mossies and removing the brain.[2]
Unlike other members of the crew, Ootag was not concerned by Captain Baja's obsession with the Great Gray Mossy. When fellow harpooners Geekgeek and Tashteg expressed concern that Baja was crazy, Ootag, amused, pointed out that the trip was already profitable, and so Baja could be as crazy as he wanted. When Geekgeek suggested that Baja's behavior might sink the Queepahd, Baja's personal harpooner Faidal angrily assured the others that the gods he worshipped had ordained that Baja could only be killed by a "hempen necklace."[3]
Ootag did not survive the final battle between Baja and the Great Gray Mossy.[4]
Literary comment[]
Ootag is based on Daggoo, an African harpooner in Moby-Dick. In the Chicxulub Asteroid Missed Stories, it appears that the inhabitants of Africa have the same skin color as the greenskins of Europe.
