William Nigel Ernle Bruce (4 February 1895 – 8 October 1953) was an English character actor on stage and screen. He was best known for his portrayal of Dr. John Watson, opposite Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes, in a series of films and in the radio series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Bruce is also remembered for his roles in the Alfred Hitchcock films Rebecca (1940) and Suspicion (1941), as well as the fantasy film The Blue Bird (1940), the Charlie Chaplin film Limelight (1952), and the original Lassie film Lassie Come Home (1943).
Nigel Bruce played a senior RAF officer in the 1942 film Eagle Squadron. When she saw the film, Flight Officer Amelia Earhart actually liked Bruce's character (and certainly liked him better than Sholto Douglas or Trafford Leigh-Mallory.[1]
