Nick Cantarella, a native of Brooklyn, was a Captain in the United States Army during the Second Great War. He was taken captive by the Confederate States and interned in Andersonville, Georgia where he became friendly with Major Jonathan Moss. When a tornado ripped through the prisoner of war camp he and Moss managed to escape and hooked up with a band of Negro guerrillas, led by Spartacus.
As Cantarella was an infantryman Spartacus tended to respect his opinion and advice more so than the pilot Moss. Cantarella proposed the idea of using pick-up trucks with machine guns in the bed as a means of attacking C.S. troops. Cantarella came up with the idea after Canadian fighters began using them against U.S. troops. He also helped plan and execute several raids on Confederate forces including a daring raid on an ammo dump.
After U.S. forces overran Georgia, Spartacus and his group quickly joined up with them. Cantarella and Moss were taken into custody until their identities were confirmed. Cantarella was promoted to major.
