"Moso" is a short story by Harry Turtledove, published in Space and Time, #104, Summer 2008; Reincarnations, Capclave, 2009. It is an alternate natural history in which a species of feline, the titular moso, evolved to a size large enough to eat a modern elephant and co-existed with humans. The story is set in southern Africa evidently before the arrival of Europeans, and centers on a young boy named Tshingana of a tribe of Tlôkwa. As he enters manhood (as defined by his people) he encounters a moso.
