Mike Pitcavage was the police chief of the town of San Atanasio in California's South Bay. Pitcavage was chosen as chief mostly because of his political finesse. He also used his authority to save his son Darren from a variety of legal problems.

Lt. Colin Ferguson competed for the position of chief and was disappointed in Pitcavage being chosen over him. However, over the years he realized Pitcavage's political savvy made him the better chief, that Ferguson's straightforward bluntness would alienate too many politicians to do the department any good. Pitcavage also recognized Ferguson's strengths and had him coordinate security for a shipment of crude oil after the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted.[1]

Nearly three years after the eruption, Pitcavage accompanied the town coroner, Dr. Maxwell Ishikawa, to the murder scene of Mrs. Mandelbaum to see for himself the work of the South Bay Strangler. While there, the media arrived. Pitcavage joked that he would sneak out the back way and let Ferguson deal with them but then acknowledged that he was the senior officer present and would have to face the TV cameras.[2]

However, after Darren was arrested on felony drug charges, Mike Pitcavage seemed more distraught.[3] At first, everybody believed it was because of overprotectiveness and fatherly devotion, a belief confirmed when Pitcavage committed suicide by pharmaceutical overdose.[4] But after Darren Pitcavage's DNA sample was collected, it was found to be a partial match for DNA taken from several victims of the South Bay Strangler. A sample of DNA was taken from Mike Pitcavage's body, confirming he was the Strangler.[5]
