Melody Porter was a sim justice activist, and a descendant of Henry Quick, the movement's founder. In 1988, she and another activist, Ken Dixon, removed a sim named Matt from the Disease Research Center in Terminus, and took him to Springfield, FCA. Matt had been infected with HIV.
Porter was passionate about sim justice, and sincerely believed that in taking Matt, they were striking a blow for sims. Dixon was thus more inclined to be pragmatic. While Matt was taken without any major difficulties, the two did not take enough of the HIVI, nor could they effectively synthesize it. Thus, Matt grew more and more sick as full-blown AIDS began to take hold. Moreover, there wasn't any place they could take Matt where he would not infect other sims. Dixon finally convinced Melody that Matt had to go back to the DRC. Melody agreed. As a consequence, the romantic relationship the two had begun was terminated.
