Mavros was a young man who was member of a noble Videssian family near Opsikion; he was the son of Vledas (who died when Mavros was barely out of infancy) and the seeress Tanilis. He met Krispos in a temple in Opsikion with his mother, and ultimately became friends and then a foster brother. Krispos and Mavros served for a while as grooms in the stables of Ambassador Iakovitzes, where, after an experimental one-night stand with the boss, Mavros determined that he did not have homosexual preferences. When Krispos became Avtokrator of Videssos, Mavros was selected to be his Sevastos. Even with civil war and barbarian raids threatening the land, Tanilis had requested that Krispos keep her son out of trouble. Mavros ignored Krispos and Tanilis' request and led an army against Harvas Black-Robe, where he was killed in battle. His old employer Iakovitzes succeeded him as Sevastos.
