Matthew Jonas was a graduate student in archaeology at UCLA. He had met Jennet Walker during his undergraduate days. In 1991, their paths crossed again in York, England. Jonas was working on a Viking dig in the region, while Walker had taken a secretarial job with Dr. Edwin Durrell at the Abbey of St. Oswald site. Jonas was also serving as a kind of mascot to drum up tourist interest in the Viking site, using the name Erik Iverson when in costume.
