Mary Ann Hannegan managed an apartment-rental office in Los Angeles, West Coast People's Democratic Republic. She was also a block chairman and an associate member of the West Valley Central Committee. She was in her mid-fifties, and a lifetime of smoking had taken their toll. She still smoked, using her position to secure Marlboros rather than the cheaper Progress brand.
She was informed that a grocer on her block, Charlie Simpkins, had not put up a campaign sign as required. When she attempted to convince Simpkins to put the sign up and rectify his mistake, Simpkins declined. After her efforts to be "rational" failed, she resorted to threats. Simpkins finally convinced her to leave when he asked her how she could stand working for the Party if she had to threaten people to get them to comply. She left without answering.[1]
