Manhattan District-1-

The Manhattan Project was the project to develop the first atomic bomb during World War II by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Formally designated as the Manhattan Engineer District (MED), the project was jointly run by the U.S. military, directed by Army General Leslie Groves, and a group of scientists, directed by American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The $2 billion project, initiated out of fear that Nazi Germany was building its own bomb, eventually yielded successful atomic weapons.

Manhattan Project in The Man With the Iron Heart[]

The Manhattan Project was so secret that even Vice President Harry Truman was not aware of it until after he ascended to the Presidency in 1945. With the Project successfully detonating bombs by July 1945, Truman ordered their use against Japan the next month, ending World War II officially.

Unofficially, thanks to the efforts of Reinhard Heydrich and the German Freedom Front, the War in Germany continued on. While the German project turned out to have been underdeveloped during the war, Heydrich hoped to start his own project afterward. German physicist Karl Wirtz disabused Heydrich of the notion that a German bomb would be forthcoming.

Manhattan Project in Worldwar[]

Begun during World War II at the University of Chicago, the Manhattan Project was evacuated to Denver following the arrival of the Race's Conquest Fleet and their taking of Chicago. General Leslie Groves joined the physicists in Denver with a gift of radioactive plutonium given to the US by Mordechai Anielewicz via a British submarine. Groves remained in Denver as the project's military commander for the duration, and planned the defense of Denver when the Race began to move on that city.

Malcontent physicist Jens Larssen attempted to betray the project to the Race but was killed by Rance Auerbach before he could.

Assisted by Lizard POWs such as Ullhass and Ristin, the Manhattan Project completed its first atomic bomb in 1944. It produced several more very quickly, thus forcing Fleetlord Atvar to realize that he could not conquer the United States, and invite that country, along with the equally nuclear capable USSR and Germany, to a peace conference at Cairo.
