Maleinos II was the Avtokrator of Videssos roughly 400 years after the founding of the Empire. He was the cousin of the prelate of Skopentzana, Rhavas, who would become the infamous sorcerer and enemy of the Empire. It was during his reign that the name Phos, clipped from the more archaic Phaos, came into widespread use.
Maleinos was a capable administrator, aided by the Grand Domestikos Stylianos. However, eventually Stylianos launched a rebellion to seize the throne for himself. This led Maleinos to strip the frontier towns of soldiers, to fight against the usurper. This weakened the Empire's borders, making them vulnerable to attacks from barbarian peoples outside the Empire. Indeed, this is what happened. The nomadic Khamorth streamed into western Videssos while the imperials fought the civil war.
Maleinos was killed in what proved to be the final battle of the civil war against Stylianos; Stylianos marched into the city and was crowned Avtokrator shortly thereafter.
