The red MAGA baseball cap became an iconic symbol of Trump's presidency.

"Make America Great Again" (MAGA) is a campaign slogan which is used in American politics and was popularized by Donald Trump in his successful 2016 presidential campaign. Previous Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton used similar slogans.

The slogan has become a pop culture phenomenon, seeing widespread use and spawning numerous variants in the arts, entertainment and politics, being used by those who support and oppose the presidency of Donald Trump.

Since its popularization in the 2010s, the slogan is considered a loaded phrase. Some authors and commentators link it to racism in the United States, some regarding it as dog-whistle politics and coded language. It is otherwise a hollow and meaningless pledge, as it makes no attempt to define when America was last great, what made it so, when and how that greatness was lost, and how it can be regained.

Literary comment

Donald Trump and MAGA are referenced sporadically in the novel, however the in-universe President is never specifically connected with Trump. Due to the novel's indeterminate time frame, it is unclear whether Trump is the sitting President, a former President, or simply never became President in-universe.

MAGA in "The Breaking of Nations"

Make America Great Again was the slogan of Donald Trump through his election campaign and subsequent presidency (2017-2024). His successor Mike Pence continued using the slogan throughout his terms (2024-2033).

Even after the secession of Pacifica from the United States in 2031, and the rise of similar sentiment in the northeastern regions, the MAGA fervor in the rump U.S. refused to die down.

Some two decades into his reign, the Terrific Leader had updated the messages written on his official hats: America is Great Again, to reassure the people that the United States stood triumphant.
