Lucille Potter (1901-1943) was the nurse of Doc Hanrahan's private practice in Mount Pulaski, Illinois, until the Race Invasion of Tosev 3. When her boss was killed by a stray bomb from a battle between the United States Army and the Race, she continued running the medical office, as best she could on her own. Eventually, she hooked up with Sgt. Peter "Mutt" Daniels and his squad when they passed through the area.[1] Despite Daniels' discomfort, Lucille insisted on acting as their medic. She helped save Kevin Donlan's life after a Lizard shell blew off his left foot.[2] When Daniels, who had fallen in love with her, told her of his feelings, she revealed that she was a lesbian, and resisted his advances. Daniels was uncomfortable with this knowledge, due to his strict worldview resulting from a Mississippi upbringing, but as there was a shortage of personnel, he could not justify reporting her to the higher-ups.[3]
Moments after declaring that her lack of romantic prospects might cause her to give men a try after all, Potter was killed when a shell fragment hit her between the eyes. Daniels, who admired her heroism and friendship despite his homophobia, deeply mourned her death, but did not let this incapacitate his fighting ability.[4].
Shortly afterward, when holed up in the Frances Willard House, Daniels saw a museum exhibit that further caused him to think of his late friend's nature.
