Longyoke Fells was an area in Yorkshire near the glacier. Only the hardiest of people farmed in the area, with its cold winds and rocky terrain. People who couldn't adapt froze or starved, often at the same time.

Farmer Wilf Latchett had a pet mammoth named Old Bill. In Spring, 1938, Old Bill broke a tusk while digging in the hard ground. Vet George Holley oversaw the tusk's repair.[1]
