Lindsey Olin Graham (born July 9, 1955) is an American Republican Party politician who serves as the senior United States Senator from South Carolina, a seat he has held since 2003. Prior to that, he served as U.S. Representative from South Carolina's 3rd district from 1995 to 2003. Initially, he was also known for his willingness to be bipartisan and work with Democrats on issues like campaign finance reform, a ban on waterboarding, immigration reform, and judicial nominees. However, in 2015, Graham sought the Republican nomination for President of the United States. He was critical of fellow candidate Donald Trump, who ultimately won the nomination and the presidency in 2016. After a March 2017 meeting with Trump, Graham became a staunch ally of the president, often issuing public statements in his defense. His reversal caught both parties by surprise and sparked much media attention and speculation. Graham won re-election to the Senate in 2020, and has become one of several prominent Republican officials who continue to call into question Joe Biden's electoral victory over Donald Trump.
Lindsey Graham in "The Breaking of Nations"[]
Lindsey Graham became Vice President after Mike Pence ascended to the presidency in 2024. In 2031, Graham offered enthusiastic support to President Pence when Pence decried the break-away state of Pacifica during a joint session of Congress.[1] Weeks later, as the United States prepared to invade Pacifica, Pacifica's acting president Nicole Yoshida received information that confirmed that Graham and everyone else associated with the Pence Administration were a wholly owned subsidiary of Vladimir Putin.[2]
Literary Comment[]
"The Breaking of Nations" ends in 2031. In "The Purloined Republic", James Morrow's contribution to And the Last Trump Shall Sound, we learn that Pence worked around the Twenty-second Amendment by running as Vice President on the bottom of the ticket with Devin Nunes in 2032. Lindsey Graham's status after January 20, 2033 is unknown. As Turtledove did not participate in writing the sequels, this wiki will not incorporate further information from that story.
