Leavetaking was a custom that arose in Elfland after a mysterious curse of painful weakness spread throughout the population. Victims of this curse, which made life unbearable but was not swiftly fatal to an elf, would go to a high cliff in the Green Mountains, and jump off onto the jagged rocks, to end their suffering. Mafindel was the first to do this. Belionora and Lingol were among the elves who chose this option in succeeding years.
