Traditionally the capital of the province of Maine, it is now the capital of the Sarthe department and the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Le Mans. Le Mans is a part of the Pays de la Loire region. Since 1923, the city has hosted the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest active endurance sports car race.

Le Mans in Or Even Eagle Flew[]

In May 1940, Amelia Earhart, Red Tobin, Andrew Mamedoff, and Short Keough take a train to Paris from St. Nazaire. On the way, their train was stopped at Le Mans, where they saw a westbound train had been shot up by German planes. Medics were tending the wounded French troops still aboard. Tobin pointed out that if they were flying and saw a German train or column of trucks, they would also attack.[1]
