La Dama Boba (Spanish for "The Foolish Lady") is a 1613 comedy written by playwright Lope de Vega.

The plot revolves around two sisters, Nise and Finea, the daughters of the modest hidalgo Otavio that are now of marrying age. Nise is an intellectual in a secret relationship with a poet, Laurencio, but her dowry is poor, while Finea has a greater dowry and is to marry the ladies' man Liseo. When Liseo meets Finea, however, he discovers that the greater dowry is to make up for her stupidity and proposes Laurencio to switch their engagements. Laurencio, who is poor, agrees, to Nise's anger. But as a result of Laurencio's courtship, Finea falls in love with him and this makes her decide to cultivate her own intellect. Learning that Finea is now smart and rich, Liseo demands to go back to their original engagements, and Finea has to play dumb to dissuade him. In the end, Liseo marries Nise, and Laurencio Finea.

La Dama Boba in Ruled Britannia[]

La Dama Boba was a comedy written by Spanish First Lieutenant and theatre aficionado Lope de Vega while stationed in London. It debuted in England in 1597. Most roles were performed by soldiers under de Vega's orders, who often lacked the talent or the enthusiasm. Despite this, and de Vega's superior Captain Baltasar Guzmán's general contempt for de Vega's interest in theatre, the characterization was praised by Guzman's more intellectually inclined servant, Enrique.

Literary comment[]

In addition to coming out 16 years before its OTL counterpart, the play in the novel seems to have some character positions rearranged.
