Kyoto in Joe Steele[]

In 1946, while on the highway from Tokyo to Kyoto, a formation of four Japanese tanks escorting an automobile carrying Emperor Hirohito were attacked by a flight of Hellcats. The aircraft ripple fired rockets and machine guns, destroying the auto and three of the tanks. The crew of the fourth tank immediately abandoned their vehicle and attempted to rescue Hirohito but were killed by troops led by Sgt. Mike Sullivan. Sullivan discovered Hirohito was dead from two .50 caliber machine gun bullets to the chest. He informed higher ups who informed the Japanese which eventually led to Japan's surrender.[1]
