Komanos was a leading citizen of Rhodes and was prominent in the polis's politics. He presided over the citizens' assembly at which Rhodian citizens voted against giving up their neutrality by allying with Demetrios and Antigonos.[1] A short while later, he enlisted Menedemos and Sostratos to serve as envoys to Ptolemaios during their upcoming trading expedition to Alexandria, in the hopes that the city could protect itself from Demetrios' wrath by using the rival warlord as a counterweight.[2]
When Menedemos and Sostratos returned to Rhodes, Menedemos summoned Komanos, along with his father and uncle, to meet the Aphrodite at the dock. He informed them of the Egyptian defeat at Salamis, news that was deeply alarming to the entire polis. Komanos then took charge of the weapons which the Aphrodite had carried for Ptolemaios's soldiers and added them to the Rhodian armory.[3] For the remainder of the fall, Komanos closely followed as much news from abroad as reached the city and shrewdly considered Rhodes' narrowing paths to maintaining its independence.[4]
