Klaus Pirckheimer was an Unterscharführer in the SS. In October 1944, he was stationed in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, serving as driver for Haupsturmführer Joseph Stieglitz. When Stieglitz was informed of a village of Zigeuner three kilometers south of Nagylengyel, Pirckheimer drove the lead car in a convoy of German and Hungarians to round the villagers up. On the way, Stieglitz shared with Pirckheimer his frustration with the fact that HQ had waited several days before alerting him of the Zigeuner.[1]
When they found the camp, Pirckheimer was vocally excited that the Zigeuner had not left.[2] Later, after Stieglitz had convinced the village to come along, Pirckheimer expressed relief that the round-up had gone smoothly.[3]
