Versailles

In an alternate in which the Great Black Deaths had killed over 80% of 14th-century Europe's population, Versailles was a medieval kingdom centered on the city of Paris. The city never became more than a dirty medieval town, which frustrated Crosstime Traffic employee Annette Klein. The kingdom was ruled in the 21st century by King Charles but real authority lay in the hands of the capable Duke Raoul of Paris who, aware of the weak position of his Christian duchy, effectively played the various Muslim states to the south off of each other.
