Katakolon was the third son of Krispos, Avtokrator of the Empire of Videssos, and Dara the empress; he was the brother of Phostis and Evripos. Unlike Phostis, who was conceived while his mother was still married to her first husband Anthimos III, no one had any doubt about the paternity of Katakolon, not least Krispos.
Katakolon was the most joyful of his brothers, spending his nights carousing with girls and partying. His antics bothered Krispos only a little bit; as long as Katakolon wasn't likely to assume the throne, the young man couldn't be as bad as Anthimos, Krispos' predecessor, who was another legendary party animal; not that Katakolon ever ran the risk of reaching the scale of Anthimos' debauchery.
