José was a cook of Aztec origin in the household of Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza. He accompanied Estevánico as part of the advance group of the Coronado expedition north in 1539. He'd been at most five years old when Spain conquered his people. As such, Estevánico was somewhat suspicious of him.
He inadvertently helped Estevánico to thwart pursuers by supplying Estevánico with a pot of lard. Estevánico coated two separate rocks lying a path with the lard, which caused the pursuer to slip and fall from a cliff to his death.
Later, José had the duty of informing Estevánico that another servant, Manuel, had stolen Estevánico's wallet, containing his precious eyewear.
