Joram was a sergeant in the Detinan army during the Civil War. He was harshly efficient and disciplinary, but not particularly cruel. Moreover, he did not discriminate between swarthy and blond - he made everyone under him miserable. Rollant and Smitty were under his command.
As the war wore on, heavy casualties made promotions more common. Joram reached the rank of lieutenant, and Rollant filled Joram's old place as sergeant.
