John H. Potter (d. June 21, 1864) was a captain with Company B, Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry (U.S.). He was at the Battle of Fort Pillow, where he received a bullet wound to the head, which fractured the skull and left the brain exposed. He was evacuated after the battle, and taken to Mound City, Illinois. His bed was next to Mack Leaming's. Potter's surgeon, Dr. Charles Vail, concluded that Potter's fate was in God's hands.
