The Grenye were a short, swarthy people who had a primitive level of metal working, and did not have the genetic inclination toward the use of magic. The Grenye were not united politically, living in a number of autonomous kingdoms including Bucovin. When the Lenelli, who were skilled magic users and also had better metal working skills, came to their land and demanded more room to colonize, the Grenye were at a distinct disadvantage. Hasso Pemsel, a native of Earth who was transported to their world, found the Grenye to resemble the Slavs and Jews, which his people, the Germans, had unsuccessfully attempted to eradicate during the Second World War.
Religion[]
The Grenye religion was polytheistic, with Lavtrig as the chief god. When invoking Lavtrig's name, his followers saluted by waving their arms in a clockwise direction.[1] The palace chapel at Falticeni had a gallery of paintings and sculptures of the gods. A few were depicted as humanoid, much like the Greek and Roman gods on Earth, but others were shown as literal forces of nature, or monsters. Jigan, the genderless deity of endurance, was represented as a lump of brownish sandstone. The god of death had a face resembling a corpse, and fangs like a viper, and this was one of the least macabre entries in the pantheon.[2]
