Jackson is the primary city of the Jackson, Tennessee metropolitan area, which is included in the Jackson-Humboldt, Tennessee Combined Statistical Area. Jackson is the county seat of Madison County.

Jackson in Fort Pillow[]

During the American Civil War, Jackson passed back and forth between Union and Confederate forces several times between 1862-1864. In April 1864, it was back in Confederate hands. Nathan Bedford Forrest made his headquarters in Jackson in the period immediately before the Battle of Fort Pillow.
