Jackson is a city in Madison County, Tennessee, United States. The total population was 59,643 at the 2000 census. Jackson is the primary city of the Jackson, Tennessee metropolitan area, which is included in the Jackson-Humboldt, Tennessee Combined Statistical Area. Jackson is the county seat of Madison County.
Jackson in Fort Pillow
During the American Civil War, Jackson passed back and forth between Union and Confederate forces several times between 1862-1864. In April 1864, it was back in Confederate hands. Nathan Bedford Forrest made his headquarters in Jackson in the period immediately before the Battle of Fort Pillow.
