The Italian Communist Party (Partito Comunista Italiano, PCI) was a communist party in Italy. It was founded in 1921 and disbanded in 1991. Banned during the rule of the Italian Fascist Party, it took part in the resistance movement against Benito Mussolini, and emerged from World War II as the strongest political party of the Italian left, attracting the support of about a third of the voters during the 1970s. For much of the 1970s, it was the largest communist party in the West. In 1991 the PCI was disbanded and replaced by the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS).

Italian Communist Party in The Gladiator[]

The Italian Communist Party was the only political party in the Italian People's Republic. As such, it dominated all aspects of Italian life. Members of the Party usually were given a higher level of deference and prestige in Italian society. Cristoforo Mazzilli was a midlevel functionary of the Italian Communist Party, serving as the second Party secretary of the Milanese Bureau of Records.

The Party was swept in power in the late 20th century in a wave of anti-American sentiment that led to the Soviet Union's victory in the Cold War. Its leaders, Chiapelli and Moroni were seen as heroes of the people into the 21st century. (However, Soviet leaders were much more important).
