Hugo Blackledge was a sergeant in the Confederate States Army during the Second Great War. Jorge Rodriguez and Gabriel Medwick were assigned to his squad. Without being commissioned, Blackledge eventually ascended to acting company commander.

A hard-driving man and a difficult taskmaster, Blackledge was brave and competent. Though generally hated by his men, he was concerned with their welfare, and once turned a gun on General George Patton when Patton threatened to shoot one of his men for cowardice. The soldier was in fact suffering from shell shock.

After the United States Army plunged deep into Confederate territory, Blackledge and his men found themselves in a constant retreat, with Blackledge finding himself in command of his company as commanding officers were killed or went missing.[1] The company was forced from Atlanta, Georgia toward Savannah where they were evacuated by ship to South Carolina. From there, they went north by train to the Virginia front.[2] By mid 1944, Blackledge and his men found themselves in Appomattox, Virginia, after they'd been surrounded and scattered by U.S troops, who gave the holdout Confederates the choice of surrender or death. Blackledge chose surrender for himself. Jorge Rodriguez followed his example.[3]
