The House of Lancaster was a branch of the royal House of Plantagenet in England. It was so named because its members were all descended from King Edward III's son John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. They are best known for fighting the War of the Roses against their cousins the House of York. The Lancastrian kings were Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI. Both Lancaster and York were superseded in 1485 by the House of Tudor, which merged the bloodlines of both prior branches.
