Hokkaido is the second largest island of Japan, and the largest, northernmost of its 47 prefectural-level subdivisions. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu, although the two islands are connected by the underwater Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city.

Hokkaido in Joe Steele[]

Hokkaido became part of the Japanese People's Republic, also known as North Japan, after the Soviet Union occupied the island in 1945.[1]

Literary Comment[]

In the short story, Sapporo on Hokkaido was mentioned as the capital of the JPR and was destroyed by an American atomic bomb to end the Japanese War. In the novel, no capital is mentioned and Sendai on Honshu is destroyed instead.

Hokkaido in "Ready for the Fatherland"[]

Hokkaido fell under Soviet domination after World War II. In 1953 a freighter from Hokkaido delivered a sunbomb to American occupied Tokyo harbor, killing hundreds of thousands. In response, the United States bombed Vladivostok with the same kind of weapon.[2]
