Lieutenant Commander Hiram Pottinger (c. 1910-1941) was assigned command of the damage control section of the USS Remembrance during the Pacific War when his predecessor was injured in the surprise Japanese submersible attack which started the war. This caused some resentment with his subordinate Lt. (j.g.) Sam Carsten who had commanded in the interim. In addition, while Pottinger was experienced in damage control, it had all been in cruisers. Airplane carriers were sufficiently different that Carsten had to initially make discrete suggestions but within a year Pottinger had acquired the necessary experience.

Pottinger continued to serve on the Remembrance during the uneasy peace after the Pacific War and during the Second Great War. When the ship was sunk by the Japanese late in 1941, Pottinger was not among those rescued and was presumed drowned.
