The Hellenic Traders is an informal name for a series of historical novels written by Harry Turtledove. Tor published the first four novels (Over the Wine-Dark Sea, The Gryphon's Skull, The Sacred Land, and Owls to Athens) between 2001 and 2004 under Turtledove's pseudonym, H.N. Turteltaub. The series is set during the Hellenistic Period of Ancient Greece from 310 BCE through 306 BCE, just over a decade after the death of Alexander the Great. The central characters, Menedemos, an obscure historical person, and Sostratos, a fictional cousin of Menedemos', sail their ship, the Aphrodite, against the backdrop of the plots and political scheming of the heirs of Alexander.
After Tor allowed the series to go out of print, PhoenixPick acquired the rights and published the series under Turtledove's proper name from 2013 through 2015. Moreover, Turtledove published a fifth volume, Salamis, in November 2020, the first in the series to use his proper name. The novel takes place concurrent with the Battle of Salamis (306 BC).
