Hans was a German resident of the Domination of the Draka. Both his grandfathers had fought for the Reich during the Eurasian War, which ended with German independence being abolished.
As a Sergeant in the Janissaries (slave-soldiers) at the end of the Final War, Hans was involved in clean-up operations against American resistance in North Carolina. Hans' squad, which included his confidants Usama and Shoshangane, destroyed the town of Cheoah.
The deaths of Boris and Kemal at the hands of snipers alerted Hans' squad to the opposition they faced, yet Hans still managed to lead them into an obvious trap set by Captain Fischer. Hans worried that he would soon be up for court-martial, but such worries became irrelevant when a grenade exploded right next to his head.
