Hail was the capital of Palmetto Province. During the closing days of the Detinan Civil War, General Hesmucet's men occupied Hail, facing only token resistance from Count Joseph the Gamecock's forces. The town went up in flames, either from Hesmucet's scorched-land tactics or simply one of the out-of-control fires set by Joseph's men before they left.

Colonel Florizel led one of the northern regiments retreating from Hail. His subordinates Gremio and Thisbe took this opportunity to desert from the army and make their way to the unburned coastal metropolis of Karlsburg. [1]

Literary comment[]

Hail is based on Columbia, South Carolina, with the name referring to the 1798 hit song "Hail, Columbia," an unofficial national anthem of the United States.
