Guyana, officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and previously known as British Guiana, is a state on the northern coast of South America. Guyana has been a former colony of the British, the Dutch and for a brief period, the French.

The name "Guyana" (or "Guiana") at one time described the whole region now dived up by Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and parts of Venezuela. Various smaller colonies were combined into British Guiana in 1831. Independence came in 1966, and the new country took the name "Guyana".

Most Harry Turtledove works are set when the country is still the colony British Guiana.

British Guiana was the British Empire's lone toe-hold in South America. It was bordered by Franco-Spanish Nueva Granada to the west, Dutch Guiana to the east, and Portugese Brazil to the south.[1]
