Grumm was a Mrem slave, bound by magic to Lord Sassin of Liskash. As part of his psychic control, Sassin had deprived Grumm of his surname to further cement the bond. This left Grumm a broken male, although not totally deprived of hope.
Sassin permitted Grumm to "escape" and be found by the Clan of the Claw. The well-to-do Claw rancher Zhanns Bostofa was the first free Mrem that Grumm met, and he presented Grumm at a clan meeting. None of the Claws doubted that Grumm was still being controlled by Sassin, but they let him speak. Grumm informed them that Sassin was aware of their plan to migrate across Liskash land to the northern continent, and had them hopelessly outnumbered.

Grum is named after Grumbuskin, a minor character from Cats: The Musical.
