Gremio was a captain in 'King' Geoffrey's Army of Franklin during the Detinan Civil War. He made a living as barrister in Karlsburg as a civilian. This gave him logical and analyzing skills, so that he could see that the war was not going well for the north.

It was this knowledge that led Gremio to be viewed with distaste by Colonel Florizel. He eventually proved the colonel wrong, charging at southron trenches. He fought with the army of Franklin under Baron Ormerod and through its destruction at Ramblerton and its subsequent retreat into Great River Province and Dothan Province.

It was Gremio who discovered that Sergeant Thisbe was a female serving in the northern army. In fact he went on to marry her after deserting back to his hometown.
