Greg Donovan was a computer programmer and writer who resided in Grants Pass, Jefferson. In November 1980, he caught a living specimen of the speartooth salmon, a species long believed mythical, while fishing in the Rogue River. He alerted local game warden Eric Bishop, who in turn contacted Governor Bill Williamson.

In the meantime, Donovan cleaned the fish in the standard way. He and his wife Kelly Ann ate some of the flesh, then Greg placed the remainder on ice, along with the innards. He also preserved the head and teeth. Days later, when Bill Williamson arrived with Eric Bishop and Mervin McDougald of Jefferson State Ashland, he showed off the remains. McDougal was thrilled with Donovan's foresight in preserving the remains, as he was able to successfully identify the fish as the fabled speartooth.

Days later, Donovan was part of the press conference that announced the discovery. Kelly watched from the press room.[1]
