The Great Days was the period of time leading up to the mid-21st century where human knowledge reached its peak. Technology and of more interest to Doctor James Cabot, medical skill and innovation surpassed that of the present day. The era came to an end with the Collapse due to global warming and overpopulation. A new dark ages of several centuries (no one was sure exactly how long it lasted) led to the loss of knowledge. That period ended with rediscovery of the printing press which allowed the accumulation of information to begin again.

Dr. Cabot had medical books from the 19th, 20th and early 21st century and new books from the present day. He found the older books more useful than those of the Great Days because he had the tools and medicines they referred to and not those lost techniques of the 21st.[1]
