Like so many in his unit, including his cousin Vulth, he had no fondness for their commander, the scandal-ridden Count Stercus. During the occupation of Cimmeria, Granth and Vulth were in the same unit as the Bossonian archers Benno and Daverio. The four could often be seen patrolling Duthil and neighboring regions, telling dirty jokes at the expense of each other and their ignominious general. Granth developed something approaching friendship with Mordec, the native blacksmith. When the Cimmerians rose up in arms, Granth encountered Mordec in combat at Melcer's farm. Mordec offered Granth a chance to step away from the battle and survive, but Granth stated that he would never desert his people, and perished in the resulting fight.
