Gorgonius was a carpenter from Lete, a village outside the city of Thessalonica. This was one of the few safe places for Greeks who continued to worship the Ancient Greek pantheon, after several centuries of Christianity as the dominant Greek religion. Gorgonius was a direct descendant of Perseus in the 115th generation. Gorgonius helped George the shoemaker defeat the Slavic army by lending him the Cap of Perseus, which imparted invisibility on its wearer.
