Gideon Schlechtman was an American crime boss in the 1920s, whose bases of operations included San Francisco. He occasionally worked with Nicholas Alexandria, whom he kept on a short leash. Even when they were nominally partners, Schlechtman was in control.
An expert on the Maltese Elephant, Schlechtman was determined to possess the specimen that was shipped to his city. He sent his agent Gina Tellini to bring private detective Miles Bowman to his presence, and offered a reward of $5000 for the elephant.
