On 5 July 1944, in Saint-Clément, Normandy, a Germany sniper sat in a potting shed, laying in wait for the invading Americans. A sentient garden gnome named Otto was watching from the fence above. Just before an American patrol led by Sgt. Sven Faelling arrived, Otto leaped from the fence, drawing the sniper's fire. The sniper nicked Otto's shoulder, but gave away his position and was killed by the Americans.
