Genoa is a city in and the capital of the Italian region of Liguria, and the sixth-largest city in Italy. On the Gulf of Genoa in the Ligurian Sea, Genoa has historically been one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean: it is the busiest city in Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea and twelfth-busiest in the European Union. During the Middle Ages, the city served as the capital of the Republic of Genoa, a maritime republic that served as one of the financial centers of Europe, as well as a center of art and education.

Genoa in Through Darkest Europe[]

Khalid al-Zarzisi and Dawud ibn Musa were part of a military convoy that passed through Genoa on the way to Turin. Al-Zarzisi knew of Genoa's proud maritime history; now it just seemed like a backwater.[1]
